On December 22, 2021, I wrote a blog post about the death of a young child James W. Bagby.  It is coincidentally that I left off blogging with this post and today resume blogging writting about his grandmother Martha!

Martha was born on November 11, 1836 in Fluvanna County, Virginia to Samuel and Hanna Tillman Kidd.  She is their fifth child out of eleven children and third daughter out of seven daughters.

The first document I have that Martha is listed on by name is the 1850 US Census (dated August 19th, 1850) where she is shown in her parent’s household in Fluvanna County.  Her age is listed as 13 and the census indicates that she attended school in the last year.

Martha married Josiah W. Bagby in September 27, 1855.

Martha and Josiah appear in the 1860 US Census in Fluvanna County, Virginia.  They are on the same page as her mother and father and older brother.  Since Martha and Josiah do not appear to have any real estate valued on the census, I am assuming that they are living on her father’s property at the time.  Martha and Josiah have two young daughters, Willie and Ann (aka Nanie.). They ultimate had nine children, five daughters, four sons.

Some time around 1882 Martha and Josiah moved to Richmond based on information she supplied in her Confederate Veteran Widow’s pension application.  Josiah was a carpenter, so it makes sense that he would do better in the city than in rural Fluvanna.  By 1903 their residence is at 1215 N. 27th Street.

Josiah died November 15, 1913 leaving her a widow.  As previously mentioned, she applied for a widow’s pension in January 1914.

Beginning October 1922 Martha was being seen by a physician and she died on December 30, 1922 of infirmaries of age at the age of 86, 100 years ago this week.

She was buried on January 1, 1923 in Oakwood Cemetery.  She was buried in the same plot next to her husband and her grandson.

Martha does not have a tombstone.  I find it likely that Martha and Josiah had very little money during their lifetime.  Census records all showed them as not having any real estate at the time of the census.  And Martha does not have a tombstone, while her husband did.   Also in her widow’s pension application she indicated that she had no real estate and had personal property worth $25.
