#44: Thankful

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks is a series of weekly prompts to get you to think about an ancestor and share something about them. The weekly prompt is provided by www.amyjohnsoncrow.com. The prompt for the week of November 22 is "Thankful".

I’m stretching the theme a little bit!  Below is a newspaper clipping from the Richmond Times Dispatch on Tuesday, November 30, 1926, page 8.  The clipping is about a party that was given on Friday, November 26, 1926.  The party would have been the day after Thanksgiving in 1926, so I’m sure there were some attendees that were “Thankful”!

I’m not sure who Mr. And Mrs. E.T. Dunn that hosted the party were, but look through the attendees listed.  Marjorie Voorhees and her younger sister Eloise Voorhees attended the party.  Based on the article, Marjorie (age 18) and Eloise (age 16) enjoyed an evening of games and dancing that went until a late hour and then had refreshements!

How I'm “related” to Marjorie:

Mary Marjorie Voorhees = Saunders Ashton Bagby

                               Father-in-law = Mother-in-law

                                                      Wife = Me

  1. Games and dancing until a late hour! Sounds like quite a party to be thankful for.

  2. Probably was a thanksgiving party for the younger people. I love how these social times were published in the newspapers.

    1. Newspaper's society pages are akin to today's social media in some respect!

  3. I love how some old newspapers put in social events. I'm thankful I get a glimpse into my ancestors' past, besides an obit that one particular person wrote. :)

  4. Old newspapers are the best for finding family details that help tell ancestors stories. I am sure you are thankful to have found this one!
