Tombstone Tuesday #1: Lula and John Bagby

Today, let's make a virtual cemetery visit.

Riverview Cemetery was initiated by the city of Richmond in 1887 and is immediately west of Hollywood Cemetery on the James River. Riverview was laid out in a curvilinear design, with six roundabouts amid winding avenues, all overlooking the picturesque falls of the river.

Lula (Loula) and John are buried in Section C-17 plot 21.  They share a plot with other Bagby's including: daughter Grace (1889-1963) and her husband Frank Hutson (1889-1959); daughter Daisy Bagby Hall (1899-1977); and son Nash (1904-1988) and his wife Hazel (1911-1991).  Lula was the first family member buried in the family plot having died in 1916 at the age of 50.

For most of the family's time, before Lula died, they lived in Fluvanna or Goochland.  The 1900 census has them living in Henrico, but by the 1910 census, they were back in Goochland.  But they must have made the move back into the city by 1916, as the address on Lula's death certificate is 401 W. 27th.  27th street is located in the Manchester area of Richmond, south of the James.  It is off of Semmes Avenue.  I assume John chose Riverview for the family cemetery since they were back in the city and not the country.  At this time Riverview was a cemetery "where people of moderate means may buy sections and bury their dead.”1

View of tombstone from the west.  From this direction the stone acts as a Family Stone, noting the family name of the plot.  The stone is also almost in the center of the plot.  © Edward R. Olsen 10.14.2019

One of the interesting things about the tombstone is the spelling of Lula's name.  Nowhere else have I seen her name spelled as "Loula".  As a matter of fact, her death certificate has her name spelled as "Lula".  Since the stone refers to John and Lula as Father and Mother, I wonder if the children replaced an earlier stone that just marked Lula's grave when John died. And were they then unaware of the spelling mistake until after the stone was placed.  They may not have been able to afford to have a new, corrected stone installed.

Most likely the original Family Stone for the plot.  Laid at the west border or the plot.  © Edward R. Olsen 10.14.2019
