The prompt for this week's 52 Ancestors series is "More Than a Name" — a challenge to look past basic dates and census listings to uncover the real lives of our ancestors. The weekly prompt is provided by www.amyjohnsoncrow.com.
A few months ago while working on my wife's maternal grandmother's fathers line I realized that I had completely ignored the mother's line! I'm rectifying that with today's post. I had this line built out in my Rootsmagic database based on a family tree that was given to my wife's grandmother who left it to me. And that is where I’ve left that branch for well over a decade! I’ve written extensively about her father’s Epps line going back three generations, but I was guilty of letting the maternal line sit in the background. Female ancestors frequently get reduced to just a maiden name—or lose their surname entirely in historical records. By diving back into this sheet, I’m working to restore full identity, context, and character to the women who are too often treated as mere connecting links on an ancestor chart. When I look at this single typewritten page, I don’t just see dates; I see a breathtaking (and tragic) record of everyday life, resilience, and mortality in 19th-century Virginia.
According to the family record, Sarah Lillian Walne was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Her life was marked by immense personal loss long before her death on September 14, 1930:
- Her First Marriage: She married Flem Franklin in Halifax County, who tragically died of tuberculosis (pneumonia and hemorrhages).
- Heartbreak of Early Loss: Out of her five children with Flem, four died in infancy:
- Martha Ann (died at 13 months)
- Lova (died "teething" at about 12 months)
- James Edward (died at 7 months)
- An unnamed infant who lived only a few minutes
- Only her daughter Emma Peterson survived to adulthood and married Tom H. Stanton.
- Second Marriage to Henry Daniel Epps: Following Flem's death, Sarah married Henry Daniel Epps (born Feb. 14, 1866). Together they raised seven children, including my wife's ancestor, Delphia Olivia Epps, who married Asa Lloyd Rogers. Even in her second marriage, heartbreak returned when an unnamed child died at 7 months from whooping cough.
Moving up to Sarah’s parents—John Willis Walne of Halifax and Amanda Elizabeth Burton of Pittsylvania (c. 1845–1890)—the page paints an extraordinary picture of mid-to-late 19th-century life:
- Sibling Tragedies: Sarah was one of nine children, many of whom faced harrowing fates: James Mathis was killed by a falling tree while possum hunting; John Thomas died of typhoid fever; John Edward died of diphtheria at 7 months; Bettie died "with paralysis"; and Camilla died at 12 months.
- A Remarkable English Connection: John Willis Walne’s father, Henry Walne, came directly from England. He was killed when a horse ran away, and his wife died of typhoid fever. John Willis himself lived to age 69 before being tragically killed by a train at Southerland Station, Virginia.
- Extreme Longevity & Unusual Causes: On the Burton side, Amanda was an invalid for three years before dying of cancer at 68. Yet her family line boasted incredible longevity—her mother lived to be 93, and her grandmother reached 100 years old! In a strange twist of fate, both her father and grandfather died of blood poisoning after being bitten on the hand by horses.
This sheet gives me an unbelievable map of facts, names, and leads. A single census line might say "Sarah L. Epps," but these notes give us the lived reality of a woman who buried four infant children, lost her first husband to consumption, and rebuilt her life.
My job now is to take these "facts" handed down through family paper, systematically cross-reference them against Virginia death certificates, probate records, and newspaper archives, and give Sarah Lillian Walne—and the women before her—the documented legacy they deserve.
