#31 - Happy 130th Birthday Gulborg Gulbrandsen

Gulborg Kristine Gulbrandsen

Today is Gulborg's 130th birthday, having been born on October 17, 1890, in Oslo, Norway (when she was born, Oslo was called Christiania.)  Her parents were Karl Anton Gulbransen and Charlotte Emilie Gustava Larsen.  She was the fifth of six children born to Karl and Charlotte and the third of four daughters.

Her siblings were: Ragnhild Petrine (born August 20, 1880), Arthur Emanuel (born September 22, 1882), Borghild Marie (born March 11, 1885), Karl Eugen (born November 1, 1888), and Karoline Antonette (born September 5, 1892).  All were born in Oslo.  Also, those were some interesting Norwegian names!

On Friday, August 9, 1907, Gulborg boarded the S.S. United States in Oslo heading to New York.

The ship arrived at Ellis Island, New York, New York on August 19, 1907.  Gulborg was detained at Ellis Island upon arriving, she was given dinner and released on Aug. 20, 1907.

While in New York, Gulborg met and married Ludvig Olsen.  They married at 295 Carroll Street in Brooklyn, New York on September 9, 1911.

Gulborg and Ludvig had six children: Arthur (born March 12, 1912), Gertrude (born March 13, 1914), Stanley (born September 8, 1919), Irving and Clifford (born August 5, 1922), and Ethel (born December 5, 1924).

Tragically, Ludvig died in 1930.  I wrote about his life in this post.  After Ludvig's death, she applied to leave the U.S. and her original entry into the U.S. was referenced so she was allowed back in the country. She traveled to Oslo, Norway, and arrived back in New York on March 8, 1931, and went to live in Hempstead, New York.

Gulborg died on January 11, 1968, at the age of 77 in East Meadow, New York. She is buried in Greenfield Cemetery,  New York. She is buried alone and we are not sure why she wasn't buried with her husband, Ludvig, and son, Stanley, in The Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
